What’s the tea?

All true tea comes from a single plant — Camellia sinensis.

There are 6 official types of tea: White, Green, Yellow, Oolong, Black, and Fermented. What separates one type from another is how the leaf is processed after harvest.

The combination of terroir (environment and soil), rolling, bruising, drying, aging, and heat are all considered during the processing of high quality tea. It’s important to note that the terroir is a huge contributor to the unique character of a tea. A black tea from Japan will taste entirely different to one from Taiwan, or China, or India, or Myanmar, even if they are processed the exact same way. That’s why we find it essential, whether it’s a Teabelly product or not, that the origin of the tea is disclosed. Not just by country, but by region. Better yet, the village or town.

We don’t typically do tea blends for this reason. Single origin is the goal here. Pure tea is the ideal tea.
